EXHIBITION AT THE RAINTREE, BANGALORE

Hey everyone, on the 26th and 27th of November I recently held an exhibition of my work along with 3 other amazing designers at The Raintree. Below is our poster and some pictures of the space, Big  thanks to all who could make it !!!

JAPANESE  KNOT BAG

I recently got this idea to try out bags using the Shibori Cloth that i dye. I searched the internet for pics of the bag and how to make it. Finally this is what i came up with and im glad to say so far they have been quite a hit !! Small, convenient and trendy, They are perfect for  carrying your phone, car keys anf other small knick knacks.

Sambar deer

Another piece from the Bamboo collection, Personally i love this piece. There are times when after i finish a piece and look back at it, i find it hard to believe i had something to do with creating it. The finished piece always looks far better than i ever imagined it could be, which is why im so afraid everytime a client wants me to reproduce a piece. When i work its not just me creating the work of art but so many forces and elements that i cannot beghin to explain. its like im not thinking, just feeling, feeding off. The owner of this piece is truly a lucky person because i could never make another.

Technique

Shibori is a cloth resist-dyeing technique that includes binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or clamping to give the cloth a 3 dimensional effect.  This labour intensive method originated in Japan. There is no paint used and each piece of fabric is hand dyed to achieve the desired play of texture and colour

Hey everyone !! things have been pretty busy here at Umoya, i things go well hopefully ill be abe to tell you all about it sometime soon!  Until then i will continue to share with you what ever order based work i’ve been doing :)

I got an order to make a huge shibori art piece recently, the client wanted something to put in an up coming jungle resort in Masanagudi. Out of the many animals they find around theirestablishment we finally decided to do one elephant piece and one tiger piece. For those of you who dont know i use the shibori Technique to dye white silk cloth and then, according to the pattern and textured i get, make the above composition. Its a relativly time consuming process but the end product is always rewarding :D

This piece is approx 22inches by 33 inches …. for more details and info you can either visit www.msarahthomas.com or contact me

thank you !

Good Morning people !!! :) . With all the Sarongs and stoles orders it was nice to recently get an order for cushions recently . The order was for 5 covers, all different colours and designs using Shibori. So my mind immediatly went to primary colours and green!!

Thank you for visiting !!! Stay tuned , more coming soon !! :)

I’ve been meaning to start dyeing fabric to make small tops or even skirts. Once i began dyeing i realized that its pretty difficult to get small patterns when using Itajime shibori( Clamping methord)  and 2.5 meters of cloth !! So for those of your who are bold enough, perhaps you can use this to make an outfit, for the rest of you…. curtians anyone???

Aloo Alooo !! recently i got an order for a batik lungi/sarong and all the client said was ‘make something you know ill like’. So, since i was pretty much given free rein to do what i wanted, i decided to do something connected to his undying love for his Royal Enfield( whose name i will not be mentioning here as this is  family blog :P )
